Thai Wisdom on the Global Stage: “Chansoma Gold Brocade Silk” Shines with Nene on America’s Got Talent 2026
When Nene stepped onto the stage of America’s Got Talent 2026, it was not only her talent and energy that captured the audience’s attention. Her thoughtfully designed costume was strikingly outstanding. It was created by Adhit Dhirakittiwat, commonly known as “Jo Surface,” a leading Thai designer and founder of the Surface brand. The outfit featured Chansoma gold brocade from Ban Tha Sawang, Surin Province, produced by the Chansoma Yokthong Silk Weaving Group.
On this international stage, the fabric carried more than just visual beauty. It brought with it a story of Thai craftsmanship, traditional weaving knowledge, and cultural heritage passed down from one generation to the next.
The beauty of Chansoma gold brocade lies in the weaving knowledge and expertise that are preserved and further developed through the work of Weeratham Taragoonngernthai, a 2025 National Artist in Visual Arts, who has played an important role in reviving the tradition of Thai gold brocade weaving.
Historically, gold brocade, or Pha Yok Thong, was a highly valued textile closely associated with the royal court, and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province once served as one of its major weaving centres. Its production involves highly intricate techniques and requires considerable skill, patience, and experience. However, the number of artisans who retained the knowledge and ability to produce this type of textile has been gradually decreasing over time. Reviving gold brocade weaving, therefore, became more than an effort to restore a traditional technique. It was also a way to preserve knowledge that might otherwise have disappeared in the future.
To keep the craft alive, Weeratham Taragoonngernthai worked closely with local weavers in Ban Tha Sawang, Surin Province, and helped establish the Chansoma Yokthong Silk Weaving Group. The group brought traditional gold brocade techniques together with the community’s own weaving knowledge, creating a distinctive style closely associated with Ban Tha Sawang.
The making of Chansoma gold brocade brings together local materials, traditional knowledge, and the skills of the Ban Tha Sawang community. Natural dyes are produced from local materials, including lac insects for red, Takhop leaves (Indian plum) for green, and indigo for blue. The process continues through pattern design, silk preparation, and weaving on large looms, often with several artisans working together on a single piece. The finished textile carries not only intricate patterns and shimmering gold threads but also the time, knowledge, skill, and collective effort of the people behind it.
In the hands of contemporary designers, gold brocade can take on new forms and reach new audiences. Rather than remaining within formal or traditional settings, it can become part of contemporary fashion and performance. It brings Thai craftsmanship to the modern stage, reaching younger generations and connecting with audiences from diverse cultures.
For Nene’s costume, Jo Surface designed the look around the performer herself, creating a bold, streamlined outfit that allowed her to move freely on stage. The concept drew inspiration from the Thai song “Waniphok” (The Street Musician), while details around the neckline drew on the forms of traditional amulets and charms, adding a subtle sense of mystery to the overall look.
What makes this story compelling is not simply the appearance of a Thai textile on an international stage, but the way a centuries-old craft has been given a new form without losing its roots. From the weaving looms of Ban Tha Sawang to the global stage of America’s Got Talent, Chansoma gold brocade carries the knowledge and craftsmanship of its makers into a new generation.
Every strand of silk and every glimmer of gold carries forward the knowledge of earlier generations and the skill of today’s weavers. Woven into each piece is the story of the Ban Tha Sawang community and the people who continue this craft today. This time, the story of the people, the community, local wisdom, and Thai culture has travelled from Surin Province to the global stage, bringing a living part of Thai craftsmanship with it.
